Alex Shugak, Sr. has served the Board of Directors since 2012. He has lived in Old Harbor for the majority of his life, where he lives with his wife, Georgene, along with their five children. They also have two adult sons and two grandsons that live in Old Harbor and Kodiak.
Alex Shugak, Sr. was cared for and taught by his late grandfather, Larry Matfay, and late grandmother, Martha Matfay, alongside their mother, Sally Johansen, Alex learned the traditional Alutiiq values of hard-work, honesty, and integrity with people, the land, and our natural resources. A life of subsistence still prevails in Alex's way of life, and he teaches his children and younger generations his knowledge about subsistence living.
Alex is a on the Old Harbor City Council and a Director of the Old Harbor Scholarship Foundation. He has also served on the Indian Education Advisory Board, Old Harbor Advisory School Board, and Kodiak Regional Aquaculture Association's Board of Directors. Many past and current students often refer to Alex as 'Coach' as he has been the Coach for the Boys Basketball team, High School wrestling team, and also the 'Little Wrestlers' USA Wrestler's team. Alex has been a commercial fisherman for most of his life, and is also a Charter Boat Captain. During the winter months, Alex works with the youth and the community members in promoting healthy practices with physical activity at 'night gym' as the supervisor.
