Old Harbor Native Corporation Celebrates Completion of Replica Alutiiq/Sugpiaq Ciqlluaq in
Old Harbor

Old Harbor, Alaska — Old Harbor Native Corporation (OHNC) is proud to announce the completion of a replica Alutiiq/Sugpiaq ciqlluaq (Barabara) in Old Harbor, a project that reflects the community’s commitment to preserving and celebrating Alutiiq/Sugpiaq heritage.
The ciqlluaq, featuring whale bones incorporated into its exterior design, was made possible through the combined efforts of community members, cultural leaders, archaeologists, students, and local organizations. The project brought together multiple generations and showcased the power of collaboration in honoring Alutiiq/Sugpiaq history and traditions.
Construction was led by OHNC shareholder Rolf Christiansen, with assistance from his grandson Gary Christiansen, along with shareholder Wesley Christiansen, the Nuniaq Patrol, Marcus Tunohunn, Darrion Christiansen, archaeologist Ben Fitzhugh and his archaeology students, as well as numerous city workers, tribal staff, and community members who contributed their time, skills, and expertise.
“Projects like this demonstrate what can be accomplished when a community comes together
around a shared vision,” said Kristina Woolston, OHNC’s CEO. “The ciqlluaq serves as a
meaningful reminder of our ancestors, our cultural traditions, and the importance of passing
knowledge from one generation to the next.”
The completed structure stands as both an educational and cultural resource for residents and visitors, celebrating the traditional knowledge while providing opportunities for future generations to learn about Alutiiq/Sugpiaq lifeways.
OHNC extends its sincere gratitude to everyone who helped bring this vision to life. Their dedication and willingness to share their knowledge and talents have created a lasting tribute to the history, culture, and resilience of Alutiiq/Sugpiaq people.
